Mathletics

Recently in 8O, our class competed in the Canadian Math Challenge 2010 hosted by Mathletics.ca.  Although none of our students or classes placed in the top echelon in this challenge (I blame it on a late sign up, which made us skip the practice week!), it was a lot of fun to participate in.

It seemed as if all of our students enjoyed the Challenge, and mathletics in general.  It was always a big hit when we could head down to the lab and race students from around the globe.

Several students really got into it and spent considerable time competing at home.  As a result of their dedication, they were able to make some pretty cool looking avatars, some of them gained bronze certificates, and oh yeah, their math skills improved.

Prizes will be awarded tomorrow for top point getters!

Salery cap issue in the NHL

The salary cap issue has helped and made the league worse. It helped by not making it so any team could stack there team and easily win the Stanley cup. However in the case of the New Jersey Devils can only play with 3 line because of their 100 million doller singing of Ilya Kovalchuck. It has helped so that the teams are more evenly balanced. That is what i think about the NHL salary cap. NHL Salary Cap

Add a new widget to your blog

AnswerTips widget

Install the Answer Tips widget.

It makes every word written on the blog clickable. Try it. I've got it installed on this blog too. (You can see the little icon below the Skype icon - bottom right column.)

Any time anyone double clicks a word, a popup window tells you the meaning, pronunciation (often with an audio sample), and links to further sources.

If you don't spell the word right the widget won't work, so remember to always spell check your posts too!

Bringing an object to life

If you could bring one inanimate object to life, what would it be?

Your mother's prom dress, your teacher's mirror, your boyfriend's or girlfriend's bedroom wall? What questions would you ask this object? Write your response in a screenplay form.

For example:

ME: So, prom dress. Tell me. When my mother was sixteen, what sort of trouble did she get into?

PROMDRESS: Well, let me tell you! You are going to be shocked when you hear this!

"Animal Instinct"

Which animal do you think you most closely resemble?

Consider:
  • quiet animals like mice;
  • bold and fearless ones like lions;
  • eager, friendly ones like dogs;
  • and finicky secretive ones like cats.
Consider your appearance, your personality and the way you move. Then write about the animal with which you feel a kinship, explaining how you are similar in personality, characteristics, and/or physical features.

Top Ten

I want you to write a blog entry. The title should start with the text "The Top 10..."  The labels should be "topten".

Here are a few example titles:
  • The Top 10 best things about living in Virden
  • The Top 10 Funniest Moments of my Life
  • The Top 7 Goals of the Year
  • The Top 5 most Beautiful Places in the World
  • The Top 10 Songs
If you are able...
Once you've come up with a great title, write the blog entry and include a well researched list of items. Embed photos or videos if that is the list you're making. Include links to sources if you can. Make it a list that's worth looking at.

(Thanks to the Daily Feed for the idea!)
